Nature Squared - who are we?

Nature Squared was founded in 2000 by Paul Hoeve & Lay Koon Tan as a sustainable business to provide innovative, earth-centric materials for design & luxury living. We work with materials as diverse as grasses, seeds, bark, nuts, seashells, eggshells and feathers.

  • Sustainability

    To us, Sustainability means both Environmental & Social Responsibility, as the two are inextricably linked.
    We go beyond up-cycling waste to include the meticulous sourcing of materials in support of local communities while creating jobs that provide security and lifelong training.
    At the same time, we preserve local heritage skills in inlay, weaving and casting.
    We aim for full traceability in our sourcing, ensuring we buy from sources and communities local to us. This allows us to divert waste destined for landfill and provide alternative income to our sources.
    We are signatories to the UN Global Compact and are ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 certified.

  • Quality

    We offer creative and technical development with Swiss-driven R&D and Creatives in Barcelona, London, Hong Kong and Cebu. Our multinational team of over 250 people includes highly skilled artisans, creatives, material scientists, engineers, project managers and chemists.
    We have 3 production sites in Cebu with full control from sourcing to shipping, all subject to stringent Quality Management Systems, including ISO 9001 Certification.
    Our track record in R&D and testing to industrial standards testifies to our quality.

  • Skills

    We combine handwork from our master craftsmen in the Philippines with cutting-edge European technologies to deliver creative solutions. Our European-based technical team work hand-in-glove with our Filipino Production team.
    We aim to be responsible stewards of local culture, employing traditional techniques and skills as widely as we can, enhancing them with complementary knowledge from Europe in materials, machines, tools and techniques.
    We have built a huge amount of Intellectual Property and know-how over more than 20 years of highly Bespoke work on diverse interior, exterior and product applications.

  • Natural Materials

    Material innovation and artisanal skills are used to convert organic waste into radical new forms in a unique, holistically sustainable way.
    Our materials are sourced from local communities as far as possible where the waste we buy would otherwise go to landfill. We choose to give it value, providing trade, not aid, to subsistence farmers and small holdings. This also provides complete traceability and a very diverse material portfolio.

Our society is conditioned to value virgin materials: wood, stone, metal, and to generate waste. We have a passion for up-cycling humble overlooked materials using time-honoured handcraft skills into countless innovative surfaces and applications.

    Our fossil-inspired casting collections. This collection is made from eggshell fragments.
  • Terramique
    In our collections, using the cast terramic technique, we reconstruct and reshape the eggshell, giving it a second life in a new collection of interior surfaces.
OUR PRODUCT COLLECTIONS
“So what can you do with it?” This is a question we often encounter when we show samples from our Surface Collections. We appreciate that it is hard to envision eggshells as flooring or washbasins or any of the myriad of other possible applications.
In our own Nature Squared-designed Collections, we offer some beautiful, versatile and sculptural products.
  • OCASO Washbasins
    Rounded contours and smooth natural materials combine beautifully with modern and traditional settings. Our collection of shells takes its name from the soft glow and shades of the setting sun, reflecting the play of sunlight on the water and the rich natural beauty of the seashells and eggshells that are hand-inlaid into the shells.
  • KAIROS Mirrors
    A collection of original mirrors inspired by time, reflection and roundness. KAIROS, the ancient Greek word for the right, critical, opportune moment, marks our evolution from creation to creation, thanks to mirrors that form a perfect circle divided in half, each half with a different surface: one of them is a specially treated coloured mirror glass, the other is a natural surface.
  • CArrelè Tiles
    A stunning composite that extends the life of otherwise discarded eggshells. Eggshell fragments are roasted to produce a range of natural shades from light to dark. The result is a collection of tiles and products for luxury interiors.

Our large trove of Intellectual Property and know-how over 20 years is applicable to diverse interior, exterior and product applications. Supported by strong in-house technical expertise and creatives, we work with Luxury Brands who are guided by the same design philosophy and quality standards.

    Excellent design and sustainable materials. Dornbracht and Nature Squared join forces in an exclusive collaboration to create unique solutions for the MEM, CYO and VAIA collections.

  • Rolls-Royce x Nature Squared
    Iridescent Opulence Gallery Project. Over 3,000 individually shaped iridescent tail feathers, meticulously hand-sewn, adorn the heart of the Phantom Gallery - an exquisite seashell-encrusted clock. In honor of the Phantom's 100th anniversary, the gallery was created with outstanding craftsmanship.
  • Montblanc x Nature Squared
    LeGrand Moon Pearl Fountain Pen. The exquisite inlay of oyster shells with black pearls is a testament to the precision and technical skill of our craftsmen. The precision of the curve and the fragility of such thin strips require the skill of handcraft.
Bespoke
Our origins are in Bespoke work for some of the world’s most eminent projects from super-yachts and private jets to hotels, palaces and villas. Our dedicated bespoke service team works closely with architects and interior designers to adapt a wide variety of materials and techniques where distinctive design is key.
With Bespoke projects, we start with a clean sheet of paper. Guided by a design philosophy that combines traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology to capture the beauty of sustainably sourced materials, without compromising on design excellence and quality.
Consultation
We start with your vision, exploring its context, with the goal of creating a meaningful piece that showcases our values, skills and diversity of materials. After exploring initial ideas, we create a composition.
Development and selection of samples
Once we have decided on a direction, we work on visualizing it for you. Before we start creating visualizations, we develop the chosen concept in close cooperation with our own craftsmen and experts. Then we bring the design to perfection by creating real samples.
Technical development and production
Taking surface samples for approval is an important step. Once we are happy with the final composition, we begin technical development and production. At each stage, we discuss progress and share photos until the final version is ready. Our in-house specialists handle all technical and design issues.

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in the strict standards we maintain throughout the production process.
The final part
